Dhaka University: The “Oxford of the East”.
The University of Dhaka is the oldest and largest public university in Bangladesh, once called “Oxford in the East”. The University of Dhaka has always been active in the history of Bangladesh. 21 Dhaka University is the first largest public university in Bangladesh which was established in 1226 with an area of 277.883 acres. Dhaka Dhaka University (Bangla: Dhaka University Dhaka University or soon known as UAB) is the oldest university in modern Bangladesh. The University ranked first in the Bangladesh University Rankings 2017. It was established during the British rule in 122. It has made a significant contribution to the modern history of Bangladesh.
After the partition of India, it became the center of progressive and democratic movements in Pakistan. Its students and teachers played a central role in the rise of Bengali nationalism and the independence of Bangladesh.
At present, it is the largest public research university in Bangladesh, with 5 students and 5 faculty. It was ranked as one of the top 100 universities in Asiawick Asia.
Purposes of DU:
The main purpose of the university was to create new fields of knowledge and to spread this knowledge to the society through the students. Since its inception, distinguished scholars as faculty of the University have distinguished themselves from those who have enriched global knowledge by making significant contributions to teaching and research.

Historical Outline of DU:
Event of 1912:
On 5 January a delegation led by Nawab Sir Salimullah, Nawab Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury and Sher E Bangla AK. Fazlul Hugh met Viceroy Lord Hardinge on his visit to Dhaka (then Acaca) and raised the demand for establishing a university in the region. On February 2, a discussion was made referring to the Government of India’s decision to recommend a university in communica.
On April 7, the British Government invited the Government of Bengal to submit a complete project of the University. On May 27, the Government issued a resolution regarding the proposed university and appointed Sir Robert Nathaniel a committee of thirteen members to be the President for this inquiry. The committee, known as the Nathan Committee, submitted the project the same year.
Event of 1913:
The Nathan Committee report was published for public opinion; Approved by the Secretary of State in the same year.
Event of 1917:
Nawab Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury A proposal was raised in the Imperial Legislative Council requesting the Government of India to establish a university for inclusion and a bill for inclusion. University Project Professor Dr. M.E., Vice-Chancellor of Leeds University, for advice on the structure and management of the University. The Calcutta University Commission was referred to Sadler’s leadership.
Event of 1920:
Acta University Law, Act No. XVIII of the 120th Act was passed by the Legislative Council with the approval of the Governor General on March 25th.
Event of 1921:
On July 1, 1921, the university began its journey with 3 faculties: arts, science and law; 12 sections – Sanskrit and Bengali, English, Education, History, Arabic and Islamic Studies, Persian and Urdu, Philosophy, Economics and Politics, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Law; There are 3 bedrooms for students: Salimullah Muslim Hall, Dacca Hall and Jagannath Hall.
Event of 1923:
The first convocation of the university was held on February 22.
The inaugural speaker was Lord Liton, Governor of Bengal and Chancellor of Dhaka University.
DU at the beginning:
On the first day of July 125, Sirka University opened the doors for students with Sir PJ Hartog as the first Vice-Chancellor of the University. The university is known in a picturesque part of the city on an acre of land known as Ramna. The university started its activities with 3 faculties, 12 departments, 60 teachers, 877 students and 3 hostels (residential halls).
At present, the university has 4 faculties, 83 departments, 12 institutes, 20 residential halls, 3 hostels and more than 56 research centers. The number of students and teachers increased by approximately 37018 and 1992 respectively.
In the beginning, Dhaka University had a distinctive characteristic, similar to its non-affiliated, residential character in Oxford, England. However, ১৯৪. An approved mandate was given instead of the university’s exclusive residential-cum-teaching character from the year.

The Contribution of DU in the Nation Building:
Dhaka University is the oldest university in Bangladesh. It has an immense contribution to the history of Bangladesh. The University has taken a central role in the academic activities of the region, including this new nation. National University of Dhaka has gone through turbulent times during various periods of our national history and has always been instrumental and important in the formation of this great nation.
The university played a central role in the Language Movement of 12 which eventually recognized Bangla as the state language. কয়েক Thousands of students, teachers and staff of Dhaka University died for the freedom of the country. Immediately after the formation of Bangladesh, the Government of Dhaka declared the Order of Order 1 of Dhaka, whereby democratic policies and autonomy became an integral feature of the institution.

Dhaka University is constantly striving to integrate the pursuit of knowledge and truth with the values and needs of a growing society.
Currently, the University is enrolling more than 5 students on a merit basis in the first year honors programs in various departments of the Faculty and the Institute. In addition to conducting teaching courses in four-year Bachelor’s and 1-year postgraduate programs, the University trains a large number of researchers in various departments.
